India is witnessing a rapid rise in the growth of fantasy sports. Apps like Dream11 and mycircle11 are exposing people to putting their money on games. It is not gambling as per the judgment of the courts, however, it is also not very different. It is no surprise then that a large number of people that play fantasy sports also want to start betting online to have a chance of winning more money. Can I bet legally online? That is a gray area at the moment but we think betting online is not illegal in India right now.
What does that mean? Read on to find out.
Can I bet legally online?
We think you can bet online without getting on the wrong side of the law. The reason for that is that the Public Gambling Act (the main act that makes gambling illegal in India) does not have anything about online casinos, online betting sites, or even the internet.
This is because the Act came into force in 1867 and has since remained essentially unchanged.
There are a number of online casinos and online betting websites like 10cric, betway, and 22bet that accept customers from India without any problems. The reason is that they believe online betting in India is not illegal. We don't think anyone has explicitly made it legal but by exclusion, no one is going to get in trouble for it either.
Can I bet legally online? No one in India has ever been booked for betting online or even had to pay a fine. Remeber also that all of the betting websites and online casinos are registered outside India. The laws that our government makes do not apply to them and neither are they under any obligation to share any information with them.
Good luck and have fun!
