Much before the concept of casinos even existed, people in ancient India were fond of gambling. It even finds a mention in Indian mythological epics like Mahabharata. Traditional gambling games were and still are, played as a past time by family and friends, especially during festivals. Slowly, the Indian players were introduced to classic games like blackjack, baccarat, and roulette. Some online casinos like Betway Casino too offer these classics. An outdated law, formed in 1867 under British rule considers all forms of physical gambling illegal in India. Laws for online gambling

As of now, there is no law that deems online gambling as a crime in India. Under the current Information Technology Act of 2000, Indian companies are not allowed to open gambling websites

But this leaves a grey area wherein, foreign companies are allowed to accept Indian players, as long as the website is hosted on servers present outside the borders of India. This loophole has allowed many international companies to cater to Indian players and offer not only online roulette but a host of casino games including slots and poker. Some websites also allow Indians to gamble on traditional games like Teen Patti, Andar Bahar, and Jhandi Munda.

Conclusion

Professional and part-time gamblers previously had to visit states like Goa or Sikkim in order to get their fix of gambling games. Or they could visit illegal shady dens operating underground, with virtually no safety net for their money. But the gambling scene has changed drastically with the introduction of online gambling. Not only can they gamble from the comfort of their homes, but also with peace of mind that they are not doing something illegal.
