What happens if you get caught gambling?

Gambling is prohibited in the country on the basis of a law passed in 1867. This law, called the Public Gambling Act, makes it illegal to gamble inside the country or to run a gambling organization. It does not make any mention of online casinos as there was no such thing as the internet during that time! This is why there is nothing in the law that specifically makes online gambling or online casinos illegal. Some of the best casinos in the world including 10cric, betway, bet365, and Royal Panda all function in India making use of this loophole.

no one has ever been prosecuted in the country for gambling online but let us assume that even if it does happen, then the punishment for being caught is INR 100 only. There is also the provision of a jail sentence of a maximum of 1 month but that has never been used.

This is why playing at an online casino is almost risk-free. It also shows just how out of touch the laws in our country have become and why they need to be updated on an urgent basis. India could have earned a lot of money from taxes that it would have collected by legalizing gambling. The Supreme Court of India has even advised sports gambling to be legalized but the political will to make it happen seems to be lacking.

What happens if you get caught gambling? Not much, apparently.
